The Polish of Mykolaiv celebrate the Drowning of Marzanna

MYKOLAIV, APRIL, 19th, 2010 CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE – Polish Diaspora in the Mykolav region together with the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration Department for Natiomalities on Saturday 17 April celebrated an ancient traditional polish holiday the Drowning of Marzanna, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The agency was informed about it today 19 April at the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration Department for Natiomalities.

The holiday was prepared and held by the Mykolaiv Regional Polish Community. The participants of the event had a splendid opportunity to get familiar with polish spring traditions, try Polish national sweets cooked especially for this occasion.

INFORMATION: This folk custom survives in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic as the Burning or Drowning of Marzanna. Its symbolic purpose is to welcome the oncoming Spring and bury the waning Winter on the day of spring equinox, March 21.
