Aug 31 2012, 16:31

ODESA, AUGUST 31st, 2012, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE ― Today, Odesa Mayor Oleksiy Kostusev has held a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Mr Toichi Sakata, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The Odesa City Council Information Office reported today, 31 August.

According to the Office, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Toichi Sakata came to Odesa for the first time. The diplomat said that the development of relations at the local level between individual cities and regions is no less important than cooperation at the state level.

Mayor Kostusev expressed readiness to strengthen cultural and business links between the twin cities ― Odesa and Yokohama.

“We could hold Days of Yokohama in Odesa or Days of Odesa in Yokohama”, said the mayor. “We could go, bring artists, musicians, and also we are ready to accept the Japanese side so that Odesa residents become more aware not only of Japan but also of its largest port ― Yokohama and its traditions. I think it would be very good. And if the delegation includes businessmen, our business contacts will improve.”

“One of the most important topics that we discussed is the development of relations between Odesa and Yokohama. The friendship agreement was signed by the ciies nearly 50 years ago. Now it is time we develop our relationship. I think it's a good idea ― to exchange of visits. It may be a cultural exchange, we can also establish business relations”, said the Ambassador.

The Information Office added the delegation will stay in Odesa for three days, the participants will take part in the celebration of City Day.
