Jan 12 2012, 10:36

ODESA, JANUARY 12th, 2012, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE — The first in 2012 Capesize has entered Odesa Commercial Sea Port, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The press service of the port informed today, 12 January.

According to the press service, 7 January Odesa port started handling vessels, ore carriers of increased capacity. On this day, Capesize Greek Warrior (270x43 m, flagged Panama) moored at berth No 4 of Quarantine Harbour. The operator Olimpex Coupe Int. is to load 85 thousand tons of iron ore concentrate on the ship which will then proceed to China. The vessel will be loaded to full capacity — 145 thousand tons — on the high seas.

According to the Deputy Executive Director of Olimpex Coupe Int. Sergyi Ovchar, in January—December 2011, 10 Capesizes carrying iron ore concentrate departed from berth 4 of Odesa Port and proceeded to South-East Asia. This allowed the company to significantly increase the stevedores and freight to finish the year with a result of 2.3 million tons, a record number for all 16 years of existence of Olimpex Coupe Int.

INFORMATION: Capesize ships are cargo ships originally too large to transit the Suez Canal (i.e., larger than both Panamax and Suezmax vessels). To travel between oceans, such vessels used to have to pass either the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn. In effect Capesize reads as «unlimited». Vessels this size can now transit the Suez Canal as long as they meet the draft restriction (18.91 m/62 ft as of 2008).

Olimpex Coupe International LTD is a stevedoring company handling break bulk cargoes of metal rolling and metal scrap; rendering of full complex of forwarding services; registration of freight documents; customs broker services; domestic vessels agency service; chartering of vessels; transit railway forwarding.

GE Odesa Commercial Sea Port is situated in the south-western part of Odesa bay on artificially made territory of 109.5 hectares area. The enterprise’s facilities allow processing more than 14 million tons of dry and 24 million tons of bulk cargo annually. The vessels of the length up to 270 metres and the draught under 13 metres are operated in the port. The total length of the berth line is more than 8 kilometres.
