Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi port to build berth No 10 shortly, and another 4 in near-term outlook

ODESA, JANUARY 14th, 2011, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE — GE Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Commercial Sea Port is planning to build berth No 10 shortly, and another 4 in near-term outlook, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The agency has been informed about it today, 14 January, at the press service of GE Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Commercial Sea Port with reference to the port chief Oleg Manitenko.

According to the press service, only in 2010 the port mastered more than 20 thousand square meters of new territory for open storage of goods. The port continues building the railway line connecting pier 9.

«In the near future, we plan to build Berth No 10, in the long term there will be another four berths. The tempo of upgrading the small-scale and large-scale mechanization does not reduce. Scaffold truck Sennebogen — company’s pride and joy — was purchased this year. We are planning to purchase forklifts and a gantry crane. We associate our special hopes with the development of the port point Bugaz. Our branch institutes are currently developing a development programme for the future. It will provide for the construction of the enclosing spurs and new berths, cargo handling complex for grain, liquid and other food goods. The problem of maintaining the appropriate depth at the berths and approach channels is known to be the stumbling block of all of our ports, whereas for our port, this problem is more than vital. The Port Development Programme 2015 provides for significant investments to solve this issue», said the port CEO.

«I will briefly dwell on other projects of regional importance and requiring involvement of much more substantial financial resources. We are speaking about replacement of the drawbridge, which now limits the passage of the vessel with the highest point in more than 28.5 m from the waterline, the construction of a second rail entrance to the port from the railway station Shabo, construction of a bridge across the Dniester estuary, which connects Ovidiopol and Monash, as part of the highway «Odesa-Reni» in the international transport corridor № 9 of Crete , the development of tourism infrastructure, construction of a yacht club, a passenger station, the creation of an integrated system of collection and disposal of waste from ships. The last four of the project are specified in a program of strategic partnership in the region Transnistria-Danube region and the EU as a particularly promising. We hope that with the help of the government, these projects will be implemented, which will undoubtedly give a powerful impetus to the port and will breathe new life into the development of the region as a whole , — he added.

INFORMATION: In 1971 the Commercial Sea Port of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi was opened in the aim of relieving the nearest big ports Odesa and Illichivsk from handling small tonnage vessels. The port includes the port point of Bugaz, located right in the mouth of the Dniester River before the railway bridge. The port specializes in handling foreign trade and coastal cargoes (grain, timber, general cargoes, livestock, and mineral building materials). It is mainly intended for general and bulk cargo handling, but can also handle containers. In its peak period (1980) the port handled up to 2 million 700 thousand tonnes of cargo. In 1999, the port handled 607 thousand 900 tonnes of cargo, mainly timber, grain, scrap, and metals. Most of these cargoes are exported to Turkey, and the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. The port territory covers 37.57 ha, 21.57 of which are deposited territory. There are 9 berths in the port with an overall length of 1,100 m, and depths at berths varying from 3.5 to 5.2 m. The port can handle up to 50 railway carriages of grain per day. Loading and unloading can be carried out both directly (ship to wagon, or wagon to ship), and via cargo storage spaces.
