NIKOLAEV, NOVEMBER, 24TH, 2008, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE – On November 22nd the events devoted to the 75th anniversary of famine of 1932-1933 years in Ukraine were held in Nikolaev, IA “Context-Prichernomorie” correspondent reports.

At 9 am the action “33 minutes” was held near the commemorative sign of famine victims. Starting from the first Saturday of September and till the day of victims of Golodomor memory similar actions were held each week, in which people laid flowers to the memorial, remembered honored the famine victims by silence minute.

Then the church service took place in the Temple of St. Nikolay. Around at 2 pm a few hundred of people gathered at the Cathedral (crossing of the streets of Sadovaya and Lenina prospekt) from where a mournful procession to the sign of famine victims started.

The final stage was the meeting-requiem at the monument to famine victims of 1933.

The total number of participants of the meeting was a few hundred people. Flags of Ukraine were streaming above the people drawing up around the monument in the form of a circle. Among the participants of the meeting there were the head of the regional administration Aleksey Garkusha, Nikolaev mayor Vladimir Chaika, officials, deputies of the city and regional councils, representatives of political parties (UPP, PUOU, CUN, party “Batkivschina” and other). Priests and believers were standing with icons and gonfalons. Icon lamps with candles in the form of cross were laid under the commemorative sign.

Ceremonial events devoted to the 75th anniversary of famine of 1932-1933 years were held in all regional centers of Ukraine. At 3:45 pm the address of the President Victor Yuschenko to the people of Ukraine was transmitted during the meeting in Nikolaev.
