The cabinet postpones obligatory GMO marking until it meets the EU norms
13:54 / 20.06.2009

KHERSON, JUNE, 20th, 2009, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE – The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine cancelled obligatory GMO marking planned to start 1 July and postponed it for unspecified period, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

Minister of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, Yurii Melnyk stated it yesterday, 19 June during his visit to Kherson Oblast.

“We are to work in absolutely the same regime with our trade partners”, — he said.

The Minister explained the Cabinet’s decision by the fact that European permissible GMO level is 0,9 percent, in Ukraine at the same time is 0,1 percent. Thus the products containing over 0,1 percent of GMO will not be allowed to Ukraine any way.

Mr. Melnyk also added Ukraine still does not have enough laboratories able to find genetically modified objects in food products. However he said the products containing GMO must for sure be marked.
