OSART Mission over at Yuzhnoukrainsk Nuclear Power Plant
09:10 / 10.11.2009

YUZHNOUKRAINSK, NOVEMBER, 10th, 2009, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE – OSART Mission Nuclear Installation Safety at power units 1 and 2 of Yuzhnoukrainsk Nuclear Power Plant has come to an end, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The agency was informed about it today 10 November at the press-service of the enterprise.

10 leading experts in the sphere of atomic energy of the IAEA and the European Commission have been carrying out a safety check at blacks 1 and 2 of the power plant.

“The fact itself that all the experts’ recommendations belong to the ‘suggestions’ category is a very good result, — Gabor Vamos, OSART Team Leader emphasized. What is more there were no recommendations at all concerning exploitation. This can in part be explained by the fact there are a number of measures and projects being taken at the plant, directed at increasing the exploitation safety.”

All in all the experts made 9 suggestions. Acting Director General Viacheslav Kuznetsov stated all the suggestion to be taken into account and fulfilled.

The IAEA’s standard practise is to hold a post-mission 18 months after. The post-mission is to check up the process of fulfilment of the suggestions made by the experts, as well as estimation of the results achieved.

During the OSART mission there were 2 positive practices found at the plant that the IAEA is to offer to the other stations over the world. Thus the experts noted the exploitation safety monitoring system as well as the system of exploitation of personal dosimeters and defining the location of the personnel in the contaminated control area.

“Not only the extent of the mission was limited but time as well. Nevertheless there was mutual understanding between the controlling part and the party under control. This was achieved by the devotion of the plant’s personnel while getting ready for the mission, the atmosphere of openness and collaboration created during the mission”, Mr. Vamos stressed.
