The amount of detained at the Ukrainian-Moldovan border goes 16 percent down in 2010

ODESA, APRIL 11th, 2011, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE — In 2010, the amount of people detained at the Ukrainian-Moldovan border has gone 16 percent down, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

These data have been announced today, 11 April, the 16 sitting of EUBAM Advisory Council in Odesa.

As was noted in the meeting, cases of illegal crossings and attempts to illegally cross the Ukrainian-Moldovan border still regularly occur on both sides of the border.

Totally, in 2010 there was a decrease (approximately 16%) of persons detained on both sides of the border for illegal crossing, the total number of detained offenders made 2 thousand 231 people, 27% of whom were arrested for illegal transportation of goods. The remaining category of detainees were residents of border areas who illegally crossed the border on household reasons, for example, to visit relatives, local markets, etc.

INFORMATION: The EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) was launched on 30 November 2005 at the joint request of the Presidents of the Republic Moldova and Ukraine. EUBAM is an EU mission fully funded by the European Union. It is an advisory, technical body. It has no executive powers. The Mission aims to make a sustainable contribution to the delivery of good quality border and customs services to the citizens and companies of Moldova and Ukraine to facilitate contacts and trade.
