ODESA, APRIl 12th, 2011, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE — The amount of cases of cigarette contraband doubled between 2009 and 2010, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.
These data were published yesterday, 11 April, furing the sitting of the EUBAM Advisory Council.
As noted at the meeting, due to the growth rates of excise duty on cigarettes and alcohol products in Ukraine in 2009, significantly increased the risk of illegal movement of these products from Moldova to Ukraine. Existing market demand for cheap cigarettes without filter in Ukraine boosted the smuggling of such products from Moldova.
“Ukrainian services operating on the border, it was reported that in 2010 revealed 257 cases and seized 18.6 million cigarettes. From 2009 to 2010 the number of reported cases of contraband cigarettes has doubled. Cigarettes were delayed as at border crossings, and on the green border. The RFP revealed over 70% of the attempts of illegal movement of cigarettes in small quantities. The larger the party were detained for the green border, mainly on the Transnistrian segment of the border. Another potential threat is the illegal movement of raw tobacco”, pointed out the participants of the meeting.
