ODESA, AUGUST 10th, 2011, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE — 15—26 August, VII International Chess Festival in memory of Efim Geller will be held in Odesa, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The agency has been informed about it today, 10 August, at the press service of the festival’s partner — Commercial Bank Pivdenny.

According to the press service, the festival consists of four stages: active chess for girls and boys under the age of 18 (individual tournaments will be held for children up to 8, 10, 12, 14-18 y.o.), tournament in classical chess C for youngsters, B — for players that have a national ranking, tournament A — international tournament under the FIDE auspices for the professionals.

“Efim Petrovich Geller is a symbolic figure for the chess community. He won seven times in the USSR team at the Chess Olympiads, twice champion of the USSR in and won several major international tournaments. And last but not least — Efim Geller was born in Odesa and was named Odesa’s best sportsman of the twentieth century.

The Festival Efim Geller Memorial is fairly well known among chess amateurs and professionals, its popularity has been growing from year to year. The tournament provides an opportunity for participants to enhance their skills — from the implementation of the discharge to the grandmaster title, but also to obtain or improve ranking in the FIDE International Classification.

The opening of Children’s active chess tournament will be held 15 August at 10:00 (registration August 14), tournament A, B and C — 20 August at 16:00 (registration 19 August). All events are held indoors Odesa chess and checkers club at Kanatna St., 95a.
