Wine Cultural Centre Shabo recognised European Cultural Heritage

ODESA, SEPTEMBER 19th, 2011, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE — Wine Cultural Centre Shabo has officially been included in the International Association for Culture and Tourist Exchange, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

This was aanounced yesterday, 18 September, at the International Forum European Heritage Days at Chabot.

Thus, for the first time in Ukrainian history, a Ukrainian object has been recognized wine heritage of Europe.

18 September, the International Forum European Heritage Days at Shabo, where representatives of the Council of Europe, international experts and domestic winemakers discussed projects for the development of wine cultural routes in Ukraine, issues related to the culture of alcohol consumption, and presented the European wine museum map.

The European Heritage Days is a festival founded 20 years ago by the Council of Europe and designed to draw attention to local attractions and cultural sites in the European context. This year the festival founders paid their special attention to the matter of wine cultural heritage.

Representatives of the Council of Europe have chosen the venue of the International Forum not by chance: at present, Wine Cultural Centre Shabo, located 70 km from Odesa — in the village of Shabo, is the first and only one cultural and educational complex that combines a unique museum maze, historic wine cellars and a modern hi-tech enterprise.

According to expert assessment of the Council of Europe, Wine Cultural Centre Shabo has unique objects and is an example of respect for the cultural heritage of Ukraine.

“We are all united by the understanding that wine and the process of its creation is an art which, well-deserved, can be considered cultural heritage. And it must also be preserved for future generations. Such centres of wine culture as Shabo, wine museums in France, Spain, Turkey, Switzerland and other countries are founded just for this purpose”, said the head of the European Heritage Days programme, the Head of the project Wine, Cultural and Tourist Exchange, Madelena Grossmann of the Regional Co-operation Division Directorate of Culture and Cultural and Natural Heritage Council of Europe.

After the Forum ended, the official ceremony of Wine Cultural Centre Shabo’s joining the International Association for Cultural and Tourist Exchange.

Every year, Wine Cultural Centre Shabo is visited by tens of thousands of people. Most popular are family tours. During the tour, our guests obtain foundations of drinking culture, to build up sampling skills. Here, our guests come into contact with art, philosophy and history of wine. After our excursions, people change their attitude to wine. We realise that this is not simply food. This is a measure of civilization and national culture heritage. A civilized attitude to wine is a sign of a civilized state”, said chairman of the company Shabo Vaja Iukuridze.
