ODESA, DECEMBER 15th, 2011, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE — President of the German Union for Animal Protection Thomas Schroeder has stated the Union wants EURO 2012 to be a special event in Ukraine which hasn’t been purchased at the expense of homeless animals’ deaths, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

Mr Schroeder stated yesterday, 14 December during a press conference at Context-Prichernomorie.

“Millions of people around the world and millions of animal friends in Germany saw the terrible pictures of torture and destruction of animals in Ukraine, implemented allegedly in connection with the programme clean cities for EURO 2012. We, being representatives of the German Animal Protection Union, believe that it is not enough to convict several people who so cruelly treated these animals. Here we need different measures — an active approach making people treat animals in a more humane manner. We would like EURO 2012 to be a merry holiday, which hasn’t been purchased at the expense of stray animals’ deaths. But we wouldn’t like to dwell on EURO 2012, we want continue our work. Our work will be extended further — beyond the EURO host cities”, he said.

“We will actively monitor the situation in Ukraine, because now everyone is nervous, and even the organizers of Euro 2012 also became nervous after the whole world flooded with disturbances after they had seen the pictures of what is happening in Ukraine, where the homeless dogs are simply exterminated. This should not happen, and we will take action if this persists”, said T. Schroeder.
