Leonid Kuchma receives the Mikhail Vorontsov Honorary Medal

ODESA, OCTOBER 10th, 2012, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE ― Member of the Parliament of Ukraine, Chairman of the Panel of Experts Organizing Committee of The Mikhail Vorontsov Honorary Medal for Special Contribution to Development of Odesa Region Sergiy Grynevetsky has awarded the former President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma with the Mikhail Vorontsov Honorary Medal, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The solemn award-giving ceremony took place yesterday, 9 October, at the Wine Culture Centre Shabo.

“In 2012, the founders of the medal — Context-Prichernomorie news agency and the Panel of Experts decided to award five honorary trophies. In particular, they are former President of Ukraine (1994 — 2005) Leonid Kuchma was distinguished with the award for personal contribution and assistance in the preservation of historical and cultural heritage and socio-economic potential of Odesa Region. I want to thank you for the possibility to present this award to you personally”, Director of Context-Prichernomorie news agency Anna Gavshina stated.

The former President of Moldova (1996 ― 2001) Petr Luchinsky, the first secretary of the Odesa Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine (1988 — 1990) Georgy Kryuchkov, chairman of the Odesa Regional State Administration (1995 — 1998) Ruslan Bodelan, President of the Industrial and Trade Company Shabo, Associate President of the Growers and Winemakers of the Odesa Region Mr Vazha Iukuridze attended the ceremony.

As reported before, the solemn ceremony was held 2 March, 2012, at the Windsor Hall of the Bristol Hotel.

In 2012, the founders of the medal — Context-Prichernomorie news agency and the Panel of Experts decided to award five honorary trophies.

In particular, they are former President of Ukraine (1994—2005) Leonid Kuchma was distinguished with the award for personal contribution and assistance in the preservation of historical and cultural heritage and socio-economic potential of Odesa Region. However, Mr Kuchma was unable to attend the ceremony for some reason.

Among other nominees were Honorary President of FC Chornomorets Leonid Klimov — for renovation and opening of the sports complex Chornomorets, President of the Industrial and Trade Company Shabo, Associate President of the Growers and Winemakers of the Odesa Region Mr Vazha Iukuridze — for the opening of the first in Ukraine brandland Cultural Centre of Wine Shabot, architect-restorer Natalia Merzhievska — for the restoration of the five-star landmark-hotel Bristol (previously — the Krasnaya hotel) — an architectural masterpiece, historic landmark and tourist business card of Odesa Region and director the show series series ‘Life in Odesa: the Life and Adventures of Mishka Yaponchik’ Sergey Ginzburg — for the vivid re-creation of the image, colour and spirit of Odesa.

INFORMATION: The Mikhail Vorontsov Honorary Medal for Special Contribution to Development of Odesa Region has been established on the occasion of the Day of Odesa Region as a symbol of public acknowledgement of their services to Odesa Region. It is awarded for an outstanding contribution to the development of Odesa Region as well as for acts facilitating the rebirth of its spirituality.

The Award was named after His Serene Highness, Field-Marshal-General, Prince Mikhail Vorontsov, who is truly considered to be one of the most reputable person of our area. The time with him being in office for over thirty years, from 1825 to 1856, is often called Odesa’s “Golden Age”. It is Mikhail Vorontsov’s 230th Anniversary in 2012.

The award is a medal, made of sterling (925) silver, it has a round shape of 70 mm in diameter. The obverse of the medal displays a bás-relief of Mikhail Vorontsov with a banner in the background. Alongside the upper edge there is an inscription “General-Governor Mikhail Vorontsov” in the Russian language. The reverse of the Medal displays a contour of the map of Odesa Region in the background with the Vorontsov Lighthouse and an inscription “For the contribution to development of Odesa Region” in the front, in the lower part there is a ribbon with the official motto of the Vorontsov family “Semper immota fides” in Latin (Faith is always firm).

The Founder of the Award is the Analytical News Agency Context-Prichernomorie — an independent, non-governmental media organization.

The aim of the Award is to recognize publically the services and personal achievements as far as the development of Odesa Region is concerned, to determine their leadership in different spheres of life, to stimulate people to reach new heights and demonstrate their examples for coming generations to follow.
