ODESA, MARCH 11th, 2013, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE ― Venice Commission President Gianni Buquicchio at the meeting on March 8 presented Ukrainian people's deputy Sergiy Kivalov as a newly appointed member of the Commission from Ukraine, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The press service of Odesa National Law Academy reported today, 11 March.

According to the information, at the March 8 meeting of the Venice Commission, its President, Mr. Gianni Buquicchio presented Sergei Kivalov as a newly appointed member of the Venice Commission from Ukraine.

Chairman of the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights Christopher Chope, who took part in the meeting, noted that the participation of politicians such as Kivalov in the work of the commission is very important.

The people's deputy himself, commenting on his membership of the Venice Commission, stated that this is an honourable and responsible mission. “It is here, in Venice, where the most important issues and challenges for the member states of the Council of Europe, among which there is also Ukraine, are considered. Here legislative initiatives are evaluated for compliance with international standards. And I hope that the changes in the functioning of the judiciary, prosecution authorities, local governments, amendments to the electoral law, which are now being prepared by the Ukrainian authorities, will soon receive their assessment at the Venice Commission,” Kivalov said.
