The Odesa region delegation takes part in the meeting on the protection of the Danube in Budapest

ODESA, MARCH 12th, 2013, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE ― The delegation of the Odesa region has participated in the meeting of the International Committee for the implementation of the project “Convention for waste management for inland navigation on the Danube” in Budapest (Hungary), Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The press service of the Foreign Economic Affairs and European Integration Department of the Odesa Regional State Administration reported today, 12 March.

According to the Department, February 25-28, a delegation of the Odesa region in Budapest, Hungary, participated in the meeting of the International Committee for the implementation of the project “Convention for waste management for inland navigation on the Danube” (CO-WANDA) and in the meeting of the Management Committee referred to the project in which the Department acts as the 10-percent partner. This initiative is being implemented within the framework of transnational co-operation of the European Union “South-Eastern Europe”.

The event was attended by the representatives of Austria, Ukraine, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, the Republic of Croatia, the Slovak Republic, the Republic of Moldova and others. Besides as observers in the international project CO-WANDA the representatives of the Danube Commission, the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine, the International Commission of the Sava river basin, the waste management organization in Germany “Bilgenentwässerungsverband”.

The staff of the Joint Technical Secretariat for transnational co-operation of the European Union “South-East Europe” informed about the current status of the programme and submitted their recommendations on financial reporting and monitoring of the project.

Also the project partners presented the current state of its implementation in the following areas: project management; communication activities; development of waste management systems; presentation of pilot activities and testing; the development of the International Convention on waste management for inland navigation on the Danube. In addition, the Management Committee and the International Committee for the implementation of the project were formed.

International observers familiarized participants with the situation existing in the management of ship-generated waste along the Rhine and the Sava, and ecological status of the Danube.

Special attention was paid to the introduction of a financial model for the organization of waste collection, and the identification of necessary conditions for the establishment of an International convention.

According to the results of the meetings, the possible dates for the next steps in the development of ship-generated waste management were suggested. Also the work plan and guidelines for communication, which will be the basis for further work on the project, have been approved.
