US Ambassador visits the Department of Border Service “Odesa”

ODESA, JUNE 17th, 2013, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE ― 15 June, US Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft has visited the Department of Border Service “Odesa” in the framework of the familiarization with the results of the implementation of international technical assistance project “Preventing of the proliferation of nuclear and other radioactive materials”, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The press centre of the State Border Service of Ukraine reported today, 17 June.

According to the information, the visit of the US Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft was held 15 June as part of the familiarization with the results of the the implementation of international technical assistance project “Preventing of the proliferation of nuclear and other radioactive materials”under the programme “Secondary line of defense”.

During the visit, Mr John Tefft visited the place of installation of radiation monitoring system “Amber” in Odesa Commercial Sea Port and familiarized with the operating procedures of personnel of the State Border Service of Ukraine in case of activation of sources of radiation.

At the end of the visit, John Tefft noted the professionalism of actions of border guards and mentioned that very good relationship formed between the US government and the Ukrainian Border Service.

The department also reminded that the cooperation between Border Service of Ukraine and the Ministry of Energy of the United States on the preventing the illicit proliferation of nuclear and other radioactive materials at the checkpoints began in 2005. At present, 41 checkpoints for crossing the state border is equipped with stationary and mobile complexes for the detection of nuclear and radioactive materials “Amber”. It is expected to set them in the 29 checkpoints more until the end of 2015. As part of the project 4 mobile automated radiation complexes were delivered to the authorities of the state border. Relevant examples of technology are also in the institutional educational institutions, which are held on the basis of specialized training.
