Lech Kaczyński Street to appear in Odesa

Part of Polska Street in Odesa shall be renamed after President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński who died in an air disaster in Russia on April 10th, 2010.

This decision was made by the Odesa City Council yesterday 14 April at their regular session.

According to Mayor of Odesa Mr Eduard Gurvits, from now on the part of the Polska Street (Polish Street) between Bunina Street and Deribasivska Street will be named Lech Kaczyński Street.

Mr Mayor said Polish people were taking active part in the creation of the city, and many of architectural monuments built by them in Odesa evidence it. Today as well Odesa is in friendly relations with many Polish cities.

“On this difficult for Poland day we made a decision to rename the stated part of Polska Street to Lech Kaczyński Street in the memory of the President who tragically died”, Mr Mayor stated.

As was reported before, aircraft Tu-154 carrying the members of official delegation of Poland who were heading to participate in mourning ceremony in Katyn, Russia, collapsed about 10:50 Moscow time in Pechersk, Smolensk Oblast under the conditions of heavy fog.

All people being onboard became the victims of the crash, including Polish President Lech Kaczyński and his wife.

In connection with the tragedy President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovich declared 12 April to be Day of Mourning in Ukraine.
