ODESA, NOVEMBER, 23rd, 2009, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE – Starting 1 January 2010 GPS systems will have been installed on all the means of transport in Odesa, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

Director of the Transport and Communications Complex Dept, Odesa City Council, Svetlana Kobylianskaya informed about it today 23 November talking to journalists.

According to her, the Traffic Safety Programme 2015 provides development of central dispatcher service of the city. For this purpose starting from 1 January 2010 all the means of transport will have GPS systems installed on them, for the trams and buses to be able to work real-time, which is supposed to help decrease the jams at the cross-roads.

“The amount of transport has been growing annually provoking traffic jams. So we have worked out 3 variants of development, we will implement the one that the deputies choose.

At the moment the council is considering a pilot project suggested by a Ukrainian company Benish Group (a company servicing satellite transport safety systems), wishing to set up video tracking on the principal roads of the city and at the crossroads of the downtown in order to be able to see how the dispatcher service is operating real-time. The system will allow tracing the taxis, buses, trolleybuses and trams of the city real-time.

The equipment is being installed at the moment. We want to make a presentation and will invite the journalists in two weeks and will demonstrate how it works. It will be interesting you will be able to see your car, where it is at the moment”, the official said.

According to Mrs Kobylianskaya, Benish Group have successfully installed that equipment in Kyiv.

“This programme has really wide possibilities. Militia searches for criminals with its help. Unfortunately we are not tracing automobiles at the moment real-time. We assigned UAH 217 thousand for the implementation of this project to purchase two specially equipped cars”, she added.
