Sportsmen of Odesa win prizes at XI International Sports Games for Children of Hero-Cities of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine

ODESA, MAY 11th, 2011, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE — Sportsmen of Odesa have won prizes at XI International Sports Games for Children of Hero-Cities of Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The agency has been informed about it today, 11 May, at the Odesa City Council Administration of information.

According to the Administration, the XI International Sports Games for Children of Hero-Cities of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine dedicated to the 66-th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War were held. The competition was attended by over 400 athletes from the hero-cities. The games were organized by the Ministry of Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy of the Russian Federation.

The competition was attended by boys and girls born in1995 or younger. Programme of events included five sports: boxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, swimming, table tennis and street basketball, and there also was an intellectual game called Quiz Connoisseurs.

The Official Opening of the Games took place at Poklonnaya Hill Historical Museum of the Great Patriotic War. The delegations of the hero cities laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Aleksander Garden.

Odesa athletes’ performance was successful at these competitions. The students of Youth Sports Schools No 5 and No 8 took two second and two third places in the boxing competitions.

In addition to athletes, the Odesa delegation included two honorary members of the delegation of WWII Veterans Yuri Nikandrov and Hero of the Soviet Union, the Chairman of the Board of Veterans of Odesa Valentin Sokolov.

The second stage of the international games on the 70th Anniversary of Defence, will be held from 5 to 10 July 2011 in Kiev, in the following sports: athletics, indoor soccer, gymnastics.
