ODESSA, JUNE, 17TH, 2008, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE — The new tourist route Odessa — Zmeiny island» was launched on Sunday, June, 15th, IA “Context-Prichernomorie” correspondent reports.
Chairman of the Odessa regional state administration Nikolay Serdyuk and the chief of the Odessa sea trading port Nikolay Pavlyuk have taken part in solemn opening of the route.
Trips to the island will be made by the «Crimean arrow» vessel.
However, the boat could not moor to the island during the first trip because of difficult weather conditions. Tourists have remained onboard and the governor has been delivered to the island on a motor boat accompanied by journalists.
Nikolay Serdyuk has opened branch of the Odessa archeologic museum on Zmeiny where the exhibits found on island are presented.
INFORMATION: Zmeiny Island is located about 100 km from Odessa and about 30 km from mouth of Danube. The area of island is 20,5 hectares. In days of antiquity, the temple of Achilles was constructed on the island; it was considered as the patron of seafarers and all Northern Black Sea Coast where there were Greek colonies. According to the legend, the hero of Troy war has been transferred on the Zmeiny Island after his death by his mother — goddess Fetida.
Excavation was actively conducted during the last 20 years on the territory of the island and amphoras, anchors and set of monuments of antiquity, in particular, ceramics were found.
