Cytopathology founder Georgios Papanikolaou’s Remembrance Day to be celebrated in Odesa

ODESA, AUGUST 31st, 2012, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE ― Cytopathology founder Georgios Papanikolaou’s Remembrance Day will be celebrated in Odesa, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The Odesa City Council Information office reported today, 31 August.

According to the Office, in September and October in Odesa will host a series of events dedicated to the memory of the great Greek physician, recognized as the ‘father of modern cytopathology’, the inventor of a new method for cancer diagnosis Georgios Papanikolaou.

The programme of events will be very intensive, including activities aimed at early cancer prevention.

Also, the Office added that in September the Bank of Greece is preparing to release numismatic collection in memory of the 50th anniversary of the death of George Papanicolaou.

The kit will consist of eight regular issue coins and a silver coin of 10 Euros.

INFORMATION: Georgios Nicholas Papanikolaou (born Kymi, island of Euboea, Greece, 13 May 1883 – 19 February 1962) was a Greek pioneer in cytopathology and early cancer detection, and inventor of the ‘Pap smear’.
