Mykolaiv mourning death of Mayor 4 March

MYKOLAIV, MARCH 4th, 2013, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE ― Residents of Mykolaiv are mourning the death of Mayor Vladimir Chayka, who died 2 March, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

March 4, Mykolaiv mourning the death of the mayor. City officials are asking to low the state flags and to limit entertainments in the city.

Vladimir Chayka died March 2. He had a surgery in Kyiv the day before.

President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Odesa, Mykolaiv community in Moscow and others expressed their condolences. Telegrams from public figures and politicians, heads of regions, companies and enterprises of the city and the region, professional groups, NGOs, the media with the words of condolences and sympathy with the death of Mayor Vladimir Chayka are continuing to come to the Mykolaiv City Council.

Mykolaiv City Executive Committee and deputy corps extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Vladimir Chayka.

INFORMATION: Vladimir Chayka was born on October 5, 1948 in the town of Berislav, Kherson region. Later the family moved in Mykolaiv.

In June 2000 Vladimir Chayka was elected a Mayor of Mykolaiv, and in March 2002 – re-elected at the same position.

Mr Chayka was a member of the National Council on co-ordination of state and regional authorities’ and local self-government bodies’ activity.

In May 28, 2002 Vladimir Chayka became a president of the International Black Sea Club – an independent (non-governmental) voluntary organization that includes port cities from 7 countries: Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Romania, Greece, Italy, and Bulgaria. It is a bright example of international recognition given to our region and personally to the Mayor.

According to the President’s Decree from June 15, 2002, for weighty personal contribution to the development of entrepreneurship and market infrastructure in Ukraine, and for high professionalism the Mayor of Mykolaiv Vladimir Chayka was awarded the Order of III degree “For Merits”.

V. D. Chayka enjoys great popularity thanks to the desire to help anyone asking for help. He is fond of sports (football, volleyball, table tennis), plays for the Mykolaiv veterans’ football team. He wonderfully sings and likes to read fantastic tales. He is devoted to the family, together with his wife he brought up a son (now works at a small enterprise) and a daughter (a 2nd-year student in the Kiev National University named after Taras Shevchenko).
