ODESA, MARCH 20th, 2013, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE ― The retrospective show of films by Sergei Parajanov will be held in the framework of the IV Odesa International Film Festival, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The art director of OIFF Alik Shpiluk reported yesterday, 19 March, during the press conference.

“Every year we show our retrospectives, first of all for foreign visitors, but also for our audience, of course. This year, in advance of the anniversary of Sergei Parajanov, we will show his retrospective including the best full-length films, little-known short films, as well as documentaries about him”, Mr Shpiluk stated.

The retrospective will include the following films: “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” (1964), “The Color of Pomegranates” (1968), “Andries” (1954), “The Legend of the Suram Fortress” (1984), as well as short films “Hagop Hovnatanian” (1967), “Arabesque on A Pirosmani Theme” (1985), “Kyiv Frescoes” (1966).

Special event will be the demonstration of the restored version of the documentary “Maestro” by Aleksandr Kaidanovsky.

The special guest will be Ukrainian actress Larisa Kadochnikova, who played the main role in the film “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors”.

Also as part of the film festival in Odesa Literature Museum it will be the exhibition of Parajanovs’ works, which will include the most famous of his collages.

INFORMATION: Sergei Parajanov was Georgian-born Armenian film director and artist who made significant contributions to Ukrainian, Armenian and Georgian cinema. He invented his own cinematic style, which was totally out of step with the guiding principles of socialist realism (the only sanctioned art style in the USSR). This, combined with his controversial lifestyle and behaviour, led Soviet authorities to repeatedly persecute and imprison him, and suppress his films.
