17:47 / 04.05.2014

ODESA, MAY 4th, 2014, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE – EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on behalf of the European Union has expressed her condolences to the families of those killed on May 2 in Odesa, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

The full text of the speech is available to the agency: “The EU is deeply saddened by the deaths and many wounded of yesterday’s events took place in Odesa. The European Union expresses its sincere condolences to the families of all the victims of indiscriminate violence.

Facts that led to the tragic loss of so many lives should be installed by an independent investigation. However, all those responsible for these criminal acts must be brought to justice.

The EU calls on all to exercise maximum restraint and not to use this tragedy to heat greater hatred, discord and senseless violence.

This should be an occasion for reflection and opportunity for all Ukrainians to come together and find ways to overcome differences that have been artificially heated up in recent months. Now all political forces should realize their responsibility and to resort to a peaceful and comprehensive dialogue on the joint search for ways out of the crisis.

All signatories of the Geneva Declaration total of 17 April should intensify their efforts to implement it. The EU, for its part, is fully configured and will continue to do everything possible in this direction.”
