Monument to Heroes of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet Squadron restored in Odesa

ODESA, NOVEMBER 14th, 2014, CONTEXT-PRICHERNOMORIE — Monument to Heroes of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet Squadron has been restored in Odesa, Context-Prichernomorie correspondent reports.

Odesa City Council Information Department noted today, 14 November.

According to the information, today, 14 November, the opening ceremony of the reconstructed Monument to Heroes of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet Squadron was held in Taras Shevchenko Park.The opening ceremony of the monument was attended by Secretary of the Odesa City Council Oleg Bryndak, head of the Office for Cultural Heritage Preservation Andriy Shelyugin, veterans representatives of Navy organization “Black Sea Fleet”, representatives of the trade union of maritime transport, cadets of Odesa Sea Fleet Technical College and Odesa Marinesco School. Opening of the monument symbolized the traditional cutting of the red ribbon.

The monument recalls the passenger and cargo ships to evacuate residents of Odesa and the troops during the Great Patriotic War. On the back side of the monument facing the port, located cast icon of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and travelers. On the granite parapet — a memorial inscription: “to Heroes of the Soviet Black Sea Fleet Squadron”.

“Sometimes you do not need to invent something new, you want to keep what we got. For Odesa as marine city, this monument is very symbolic,” Oleg Bryndak said.

According to the secretary of the Odesa City Council, the city authorities will continue work on the reconstruction of architectural and cultural heritage of Odesa.
