Astronomical Observatory of ONU will celebrate the 145th anniversary

Odessa, 04 OCTOBER 2016, CONTEXT-Prichernomorie — Astronomical Observatory of Odessa National University named after I.I.Mechnikov on Thursday, October 6 will mark the 145 th anniversary, the correspondent of IA «Context-Prichernomorie» reports.

It was reported to the agency today, on October 04, by the press service of the Odessa National University.

As noted in the press service, the events to mark the anniversary, will be held October 6 at 14:00 at the address: ul. Marazlievskaya, 1v (Shevchenko Park), Astronomical Observatory of Odessa National University.

The program of the anniversary celebration: astronomical artifacts exhibition of nineteenth and twentieth centuries; «Spacewalk»; meteorites exposure; as well as a press conference, which will hold the rector of ONU Igor Koval, director of the Astronomical Observatory Sergei Andrievsky, the head of the meteor group (meteor patrol) Yuri Gorbanevsky, representative of the National Space Agency of Ukraine.

And at 19:00 for all fans of astronomy and the starry sky will host a Day of open doors of the Observatory.

Mechnikov or Odessa Observatory is an astronomical Observatory, founded in 1871 in the Imperial University of Novorossiysk. The Observatory was part of the astronomy Department. After the liquidation in 1920, Novorossiysk University, the Observatory was renamed into the Odessa state astronomical Observatory, which for some time was called and worked as the Chief of the state astronomical Observatory of the people's Commissariat of Ukraine. In 1933, the Observatory is again included in the Department of astronomy created at the Odessa state University. In the 1990-ies were provided with new tools with diameters of mirrors: 80-cm — Turkmenistan, a 100-cm — in Slovakia. Then the Observatory was transferred to the rank of Scientific-research Institute of the 1st category while maintaining the historical name «Astronomical Observatory». Currently, Odessa astronomical observatory is a division of the Odessa National University, is the world's leading organization for the study of the chemical and dynamical evolution of stars and galaxies. Actively develop the latest techniques of observation of stars, meteors, satellites, sky-mechanical studies are available textbooks on astronomy, the scientific journal «Odessa Astronomical Publications», Odessa astronomical calendar.
