Honorary Consulate of Latvia is planned to be opened in Odesa in 2014. Acting first deputy mayor of Odesa Kyrylo Shalamay met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to Ukraine Argita Daudze. During the meeting the parties discussed the possibility of the development of bilateral cooperation. A significant step towards the implementation of cooperation will be the opening of the Honorary Consulate of Latvia in Odesa, scheduled for 2014.

Ukraine and the European Union have a long history of cooperation and plan for a closer partnership. Latvia as an EU member state has all the potential to contribute to these contacts. We have a special interest to Odesa. In March 2013 the President of our country visited your city. During the visit, common interests were identified, and we are ready to move on to matters,” Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to Ukraine noted.

Latvia is interested in cultural cooperation, in particular with the Odesa National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet. In addition, there is a range of purely economic interests. For example, Riga is ready to organize a series of seminars for the Odesa businessmen devoted to the project “Container Train ‘ZUBR’”.

In turn, Odesa is interested in Latvia's experience in the implementation of housing services and utilities. In response Mrs Daudze suggested specialists of the Odesa City Council to visit several cities in Latvia for a detailed acquaintance with the reform. The two sides also expressed their interest in resuming the practice of educational students’ exchange.

“We need to develop any form of contact. The opening of the Honorary Consulate of Latvia in Odesa is one of the catalysts for our further cooperation. In addition, Days of Latvia in Odesa will be held in 2014,” Mr Shalamay emphasized.
