OSCE observers to watch the election campaign going in Odesa
17:14 / 12.01.2010

The OSCE observers will be watching the presidential election campaign in Odesa.

OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President Joao Soares stated it during his meeting with the mayor of Odesa Eduard Gurvits.

The total amount of the observers coming to Ukraine will be 138 parliamentarians of 35 countries of the world. Most of them have the necessary experience and already visited Ukraine during the previous election campaign.

“We held meetings with representatives of various public organizations, presidential candidates and authorities of all levels. We would like to here Mayor Gurvits’ opinion of the coming election in Ukraine. It was really important to us to hear his opinion of what is going on in such an important city as Odesa”, Mr Soares said.

Joao Soares said he hoped the election would go well, fairly and calmly, adding the observers would hold a press-conference for journalists next day after the vote in Kyiv, and later they were going to make a preliminary statement on how the election had gone.

Mr Gurvits in his turn told the OSCE observers of the preparation for the election going on in the city, and international ties of Odesa and also thanked the guests for their visit.

“We pay much attention to the preparation for the election. There are issues causing certain concern. First of all this is the list of the electorate, as well as the translation of the available data from Russian into Ukrainian which is not always accurate. However no doubt we will receive the result showing the real choice of Odesa’s citizens”, Mayor added.
